As Sertoma continues through its next century of service, it faces both a challenge and an opportunity in the shifting landscape of volunteerism and declining community engagement. With new generations seeking more flexible, purpose-driven ways to give back, the organization must evolve by embracing shifting trends. The core mission of Service to Mankind remains vital, but sustaining impact will likely depend on adapting to new models of connection—ones that prioritize cultural openness, innovation and a deeper sense of community built across both physical and virtual spaces.
It is in this spirit that Sertoma has chosen to focus much of its education for the 2025 International Conference around the powerful documentary, Join or Die. The film explores the erosion of community engagement in the United States, framed through the influential research of political scientist Robert D. Putnam, particularly his landmark book Bowling Alone. By showcasing the importance of joining and sustaining civic organizations, the documentary provides a compelling narrative that reinforces why clubs like Sertoma matter now more than ever. Combining perspectives from influential political figures with the real-life experiences of everyday Americans involved in grassroots efforts, the film powerfully illustrates the vital role of social connection and civic engagement in shaping our future.
The day’s education will begin with a screening of the Join or Die documentary, setting the stage for thoughtful reflection and discussion later on. In the afternoon, attendees will take part in a facilitated conversation session designed to explore the film’s themes and how they align with Sertoma’s role in civic engagement. Using the documentary as a springboard, the group will explore how changing trends in volunteerism—such as the desire for flexible, mission-driven engagement—can inform new approaches to sustaining Sertoma’s mission of Service to Mankind. Participants will be encouraged to share their own experiences, insights and ideas for fostering innovation and meaningful connection within their clubs and communities. Together, we’ll consider how Sertoma can not only adapt to the shifting landscape of community engagement but also lead the way in revitalizing the spirit of service in both traditional and emerging spaces.
Registration and hotel reservations are now open for the 2025 International Conference, which will be held on October 10-11 in the Columbus suburb of Dublin, Ohio. Click here to learn more about the event, see the schedule and more.
