When people talk to parents of deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) children, the conversation often turns toward the challenges—communication hurdles, access to services, and navigating a world not always designed for their kids. But what if we paused to ask about the joys of raising these amazing children? What if we made space to celebrate their strengths, milestones and everyday moments of connection?
That's exactly the idea behind the Fostering Joy Journal, a beautiful initiative from Hands & Voices, an organization dedicated to supporting families with DHH children. This journal isn’t just a place to write things down—it’s a heartfelt tool designed to shift focus toward the joy, resilience and deep bonding that takes place in these families every day.
More than just a diary, the Fostering Joy Journal is a guided experience. Filled with thoughtful prompts, it invites parents and caregivers to reflect on their journey, capture meaningful moments and intentionally create space for joy. Whether it's a moment of laughter during bedtime, a new sign learned or a shared triumph at school, these memories become a kind of scrapbook.
According to Hands & Voices, journaling not only helps caregivers stay grounded in gratitude and joy, but it also supports a DHH child’s social-emotional development and overall well-being. By focusing on strengths and celebrating even the smallest victories, families can foster a positive mindset that will uplift an entire household.
Community Support in Action: Fergus Falls Sertoma Club
Recognizing the value of this powerful resource, the Fergus Falls Sertoma Club chose to make the Fostering Joy Journal the focus of its 2024 Sertoma Club Grant. In a special luncheon, the club presented Hands & Voices with a donation aimed at expanding access to these journals for local families.
Thanks to this support, more parents and caregivers in the region will receive their own copies of the journal—available in both English and Spanish—helping to ensure that language is never a barrier to joy. Adding a personal and inspiring touch, the journal also features illustrations by a young DHH artist, making the book not only a tool for reflection but also a work of art created by someone who shares in the journey.
