From Kits to Classrooms: Sertoma Club Expands Support for Speech Development

Accessible learning in the classroom plays a vital role in the development of students of all ages and abilities. However, for children living with hearing loss, the challenges can be even greater. The Hillsboro Breakfast Sertoma Club is committed to easing the burdens these students face.

Earlier this spring, the club made a series of donations to support students and teachers at three local institutions. At Beckemeyer Elementary School, their contribution enabled speech and language teachers to purchase essential learning materials for 80 students who require specialized services.

At nearby Coffeen Elementary, the school’s youngest learners (ages 1 to pre-K) now have access to reusable learning kits that help parents support speech and language development at home. Each kit includes instructions to guide parents in their child’s learning.

Finally, at Hillsboro Health, staff were able to acquire developmental materials for children ages one to four. The club estimates that this donation alone will impact more than 400 children.

Club Past President Earl Meier noted that these donations, made possible in part through the Sertoma Club Grant Program, have garnered significant local media attention. He mentioned that four articles highlighting their contributions were published in the Hillsboro area. Additionally, a generous neighbor donated funds to sponsor an advertisement, helping the club further amplify its Service to Mankind message.

“The Hillsboro Breakfast Sertoma Club certainly thanks Sertoma International for this generous donation,” Meier said. “It has enhanced our local club’s footprint in this area.”

The Hillsboro Sertoma Club has served its Central Illinois community since April 1973. In addition to supporting local speech and hearing causes, the club has been a proud of partner of many other organizations including the Hillsboro Angel Tree Program, Imagine Hillsboro, the Give Grant a Lift Committee and more.
