Inspiration often comes from the simplest stories of kindness. Recently, Sertoman Vinod Gupta found his inspiration in the pages of the Sertoman magazine, where he read about a club that had served thousands of meals to the unhoused over the years. Deeply moved by their compassion and service, Vinod decided to bring that same spirit of generosity to his own community in Springfield, Illinois.
“This gave me the inspiration to request that [my club help] serve food to homeless brothers and sisters at Helping Hands in Springfield,” Vinod said.
Motivated by this idea, Vinod reached out to the Sertoma Club of Springfield, Illinois, requesting that his club take part in a similar act of service — providing food for those in need through Helping Hands of Springfield. The Sertoma Club Board warmly embraced the idea and voted to donate $500 to Helping Hands to support the purchase and serving of meals to the city’s unhoused community.
On a beautiful fall day in late October, that vision became a reality. Club Board Members Diane Long, Susan Allen and Rick Schuster joined Gupta in presenting the donation to Helping Hands of Springfield. They were joined by Robert Gillespie, Executive Director of Helping Hands (far left), Kitchen Manager Blaine Tavender (third from right), and another dedicated Helping Hands staff member (far right). The moment was captured in the heartfelt photo by Anjna Gupta below.
This collaboration between the Sertoma Club of Springfield, Illinois, and Helping Hands stands as a reminder of how small acts of kindness — inspired by others — can ripple outward to make a big difference in the lives of those who need it most.
