Greater Grand Forks Sertoma Club Supports Innovative Communication for BiPAP Patients

Earlier this fall, the Greater Grand Forks Sertoma Club awarded a grant to Altru Health System to support an innovative solution that helps patients on BiPAP machines communicate more effectively.

The idea for this project came from a simple but critical observation: patients on BiPAP machines often have severe difficulty communicating with caregivers and loved ones. While the tightly sealed masks are essential for respiratory support, they also muffle speech. This can result in frustration, fear and even isolation for those receiving care.

Determined to find a solution, Altru’s care team turned to an unlikely source: TikTok. There, they discovered SPEAX, a simple yet powerful device that is transforming how patients communicate. The SPEAX system includes a small patch that adheres to the BiPAP mask and connects to a battery-powered amplifier, giving patients a clear voice even while wearing the mask.

Thanks to the club’s support, this innovative communication tool is now helping patients regain the ability to express themselves, connect with loved ones and feel more empowered during their care. This partnership highlights the incredible impact of combining healthcare innovation with community support.

“This partnership between Sertoma and Altru reflects the very mission of Sertoma: to serve communities by improving communication health and wellness,” the club said. “By funding this innovative tool, we’re not just improving communication—we're restoring dignity, autonomy and connection for those facing critical health challenges. We are honored to contribute to such a meaningful improvement in patient care and look forward to continuing our work in the community.”
