#MemberMonday: Sharing Sertoma’s Hearing Health Mission During Better Hearing & Speech Month

By Brandi McGrath Kong, Director of Member Services and Conferences

May is Better Hearing & Speech Month, and with a national hearing health mission behind you, this can be the perfect venue for promoting your Sertoma club at the local level!

Today, over 50 million people in the United States alone suffer from some kind of hearing loss. With our technological life style, that number only continues to grow. Sertomans share the common belief that attention paid to hearing health adds quality to lives and communities. That is why we have made it our mission to improve the quality of life today for those at risk or impacted by hearing loss through education and support.

So how can your club promote Better Hearing & Speech Month in its community?

  1. Get governmental recognition. This is the perfect month to ask your city council, county government and/or state legislature for a proclamation to honor this important event.

  2. Share an article with your local media. We have an article template you can customize and share with local newspapers, radio channels, TV stations and community blogs to help spread the word about your club and the important roles speech and hearing play in our lives.

  3. Take part in SAFEEars!® to educate local residents on the importance of hearing protection.

  4. Donate a portable hearing loop as part of Sertoma’s National Service Project. Don’t forget to share photos on social media and in local newspapers to illustrate how your club is helping make hearing more accessible in your community.

How will your club promote its hearing health mission in the community?
