On the first Saturday of July 2023, Gleneagle Sertoma Club members and Boy Scouts Troop 194 planted 700 flags to line Gleneagle Drive, the 2.5-mile main street through the Gleneagle community north of Colorado Springs.
Since 1993, the club has gathered at daybreak at the beginning of July to reaffirm our National Heritage commitment in a very visible manner. After coffee and donuts, eight teams get their marching orders and spread out to line Gleneagle Drive with flags spaced approximately 50 feet apart on each street side. Early morning passers-by "honk" their appreciation as the teams carry out their chilly morning mission.
Terry Galloway, a Gleneagle Sertoman and realtor, introduced this remarkable tradition. Terry suggested Gleneagle Sertoma partner with her as a promotion for her business and as a community service project of Gleneagle Sertoma. Terry has since retired, and the club has continued the tradition, partnering with their BSA Troop 194 to complete the project in less than two hours before gathering back at the starting point for any leftover donuts.
Over the course of three decades, the Gleneagle Sertoma Club has adorned the 2.5-mile stretch with a staggering 75 miles of flags. This colorful display has become a beloved tradition, infusing the community's Independence Day celebrations with a lively and festive atmosphere.
