Crafting Tomorrow: Building a Legacy with the Next Generation of Sertomans

By Brandi McGrath Kong, Director of Communications and Conferences

There's a common misconception that the younger generation doesn’t care, perhaps because some people compare it to their own experiences from when they were younger or see it through the lens of their current perspective. But time and again, research shows that this simply isn't the case. The truth is, the younger generation does care deeply, and their passion and dedication are evident.

One of the biggest hurdles for young people getting involved in service is the sense of not being acknowledged or included. For example, a UN survey released in 2022 found that 76 percent of individuals under 30 feel that politicians don’t listen to them. It makes you wonder how many other leaders, whether in professional settings or volunteer roles, leave them with the same feeling.

Younger generations are deeply invested in the future of our world, and they’re full of hope for what lies ahead. In fact, that same UN survey revealed that 67% of them are optimistic about humanity’s future, with the most positive group being those in their mid-teens. Their belief in a better tomorrow is both inspiring and a testament to their commitment to making a difference.

That’s why we believe involving younger generations is so crucial. Whether they come to us as Serteens, Collegiate Club members or young Sertomans, it's vital that we support and nurture their spirit of service. We do this by empowering them as leaders, embracing their fresh perspectives, and ensuring their voices are heard. There's room for everyone at the Sertoma table—have you extended an invitation for them to sit beside you?

When I say "sit beside you," I mean it with warmth and inclusivity. It’s about being part of the same team, sharing both the joys and the responsibilities. New members aren’t just here to handle the tasks that might not be as exciting—they’re here to contribute, to be heard, and to make a difference. Their voices deserve the same respect and consideration as those of our long-time members. Every opinion and vote holds value, and each should be welcomed with the same openness and respect.

As you consider how your club can engage with younger generations—whether as volunteers, mentors, or members—take a moment to reflect on your own experiences at their age. What opportunities do you wish you’d had? What experiences from that time do you feel are worth sharing with them? This is our chance to pay it forward and inspire the next generation so that we can make a meaningful impact together.

What kind of legacy do you want to leave for your club and your community? Think about the impact you hope to make and the values you want to be remembered for. Whether it’s fostering a spirit of service, building strong connections, or creating positive change, your legacy starts with the actions you take today. What will you choose to leave behind?
