Georgetown Free Bikes has a very simple mission: they want to make Georgetown, Texas, nicer.
Founded in 2022, Georgetown Free Bikes provides bicycles to individuals for recreation and transportation. The nonprofit believes that bikes provide residents with freedom. Bicycles allow them to make healthy choices and get exercise. They enable people to get to school and work. They give individuals the opportunity to explore nature and their community. Bikes can even help build friendships and strengthen community connections. And all of these opportunities come without having to worry about the financial burden, which may be the most freeing thing of all!
The program is made possible thanks to the generosity of its supporters, who donate bicycles of all types, riding levels, and sizes. The organization follows a 16-point refurbishment process to ensure each bike is safe for reuse. Volunteers work at the shop six days a week to get bikes back into riding shape. Children, individuals, and families throughout the community can stop by the shop during dedicated hours Monday through Saturday to pick up a bicycle without ever being asked for a referral or any financial information.
“We rely on karma to motivate people to donate if they can,” the program’s website states.
The program has seen significant evolution since its inception four years ago. Initially devised as part of the nonprofit Hamlet Development, it became a project of the Georgetown Sertoma Club from 2023 until last summer. By mid-2025, however, the program had become so successful that it transitioned into its own standalone 501(c)(3) organization, with the Georgetown club and 20 other nonprofits and businesses helping to support its work. The program now benefits more than 500 recipients each year.
But what happens when a donated bike isn’t fit for the road? Georgetown Free Bikes repurposes any usable parts to assist with future refurbishments and repairs. Anything that cannot be reused is responsibly recycled to help minimize the program’s environmental impact.
As Georgetown Free Bikes continues to grow, its mission remains simple: remove barriers and put more people on two wheels. Through community support, volunteer dedication, and a commitment to sustainability, the organization is not only providing transportation — it is delivering independence and connection to hundreds of Texas families each year.
