Hearts-n-Hands Sertoma Club: It’s Not the Numbers—It’s the Heart Behind the Service

Small but mighty Sertoma clubs prove every day that impact isn’t measured by size, it’s driven by dedication. There’s a common misconception that it takes a large group of volunteers to truly make a difference, but Sertoma members know that commitment and heart matter far more than numbers. A handful of passionate individuals, showing up consistently and working with purpose, can change lives, strengthen communities, and carry out meaningful service in powerful ways. It’s that steady dedication, the willingness to give time, energy, and care, that turns even the smallest club into a force for good.

Case in point: the Hearts-n-Hands Sertoma Club of Mechanicsburg, Penn. With just 12 active members as of late March, the Hearts-n-Hands Sertoma Club is making an incredible impact in its community through consistent service and stewardship. Here’s just a glimpse of what this dedicated group of Sertomans has achieved over the past six months:

  • The club served as a table sponsor and even had a runway model, Mitzi Jones, in Pink Hands of Hope’s annual Fashion Show and Tea in September.
  • Hearts-n-Hands Sertomans raised nearly $2,600 for the Making Strides Walk in mid-October, led by club member Karen Shaner.
  • In late October, the club raised $3,000 during its annual 50/50 raffle fundraiser, with proceeds supporting individuals affected by cancer and other life-threatening illnesses.
  • That same month, the club was recognized by Sertoma International as a 100% Early Bird Club for its support of the Annual Fund.
  • During the holiday season, members joined their local DAR chapter for Wreaths Across America, laying memorial wreaths at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery.
  • Just ahead of Valentine’s Day, the club volunteered with Caitlin Smiles to support children battling pediatric cancer and other serious illnesses, decorating and assembling craft kits for hospitalized patients.
  • In mid-March, they supported the West Shore Sertoma Club’s annual Bowl-a-thon, which benefits local charities in their shared community.
  • Also in March, they showed up in full force for the Allegheny/Canada Regional One-Day event in Pennsylvania, with 100% of the club in attendance.

But the club isn’t slowing down anytime soon. At the end of April, it will once again host its Mary Lank Memorial Flamingo Cash Bingo. This flagship fundraiser is a community favorite, featuring several raffles and 10 games of bingo—all in support of the club’s impactful work.

In addition, the club awards an annual scholarship to a graduate student pursuing audiology or speech pathology and regularly donates its “Sunshine Bags” to local cancer patients.

Chartered in 2005, the Hearts-n-Hands Sertoma Club partners with the American Cancer Society, the Pennsylvania Department of Aging, Pink Hands of Hope and Vicki’s Angel Foundation, among others. Visit Hearts-n-Hands.org to learn more about the club and its mission.
