Serving Communities Through Collaboration

All Sertomans share in a national hearing health mission. Since 1963, Sertoma has worked to improve the quality of life for those at risk for or impacted by hearing loss through education, community advocacy and support. Because of this commitment, our clubs and members have naturally built relationships with hearing and speech professionals including audiologists, speech-language pathologists, educators, interpreters and others who share our passion for helping people communicate and connect.

Just as you would encourage a potential community partner to see the value in working with your club, it is equally important to help your members understand the benefits of these partnerships. One of the greatest advantages of those relationships is that hearing and speech professionals already serve the very individuals our clubs are trying to help. Their patient base provides a direct connection to those who may most benefit from Sertoma programs and services. These relationships also help clubs better understand the unique needs within their communities, allowing clubs’ mission programs to grow, evolve or even address entirely new challenges. In many ways, partnerships help ensure the work we are doing truly reflects what our communities need most.

Partnerships with hearing health providers also bring valuable expertise to our clubs. These professionals understand the science and realities of hearing and speech care and can help guide clubs in developing meaningful, effective programs. They often have relationships with other practitioners, organizations and community resources that may also strengthen a project or initiative. Their knowledge and experience can turn a good program into a truly impactful one.

There can also be important fundraising advantages to building strong partnerships. When donors see a clear and credible case for support, they are more likely to invest in a cause. Community members are more likely to believe in your work when they see that a trusted professional partner is involved. Partnerships can help clubs reach new audiences and potential donors through the visibility and reputation of the professionals involved.

Of course, these partnerships benefit more than just Sertoma clubs. Hearing and speech professionals also gain opportunities to give back through philanthropic work that aligns directly with their skillset and passion for helping others. Many healthcare providers enter their professions because they genuinely want to improve lives, and partnerships with organizations like Sertoma give them another avenue to do exactly that. Working together may also allow practitioners to connect their patients with additional resources, services and support that would not otherwise be available.

These connections can also provide valuable community exposure for providers, especially those who are new to an area or establishing a new practice. Becoming involved with a respected service organization like Sertoma can help professionals build trust and become integrated into the fabric of the community. Reputation matters, and active community involvement often leads to stronger relationships and greater awareness of the services they provide. In turn, this visibility creates natural promotional opportunities, particularly through word-of-mouth recommendations and community connections.
