Now that I’m back home and have had a chance to reflect on the 2026 Sertoma International Conference, it struck me that this was so much more than a list of speakers, awardpresentations, and scheduled activities. While those elements are always key and important, what often leaves the most lasting impression is something much less tangible—the culture.
From the moment attendees arrived, there was a sense of encouragement and belonging that filled everything. People genuinely wanted to see one another succeed, and that spirit created an environment where everyone felt welcomed, valued, and supported.
One of the most remarkable aspects was the opportunity for connection. Long-time friends reunited and new friendships quickly formed. Everywhere you looked, there were smiles, hugs, and conversations between people who may only see each other once or twice a year but pick up right where they left off. Networking happened naturally, not because people were looking for professional advantage, but because they were eager to learn from one another and strengthen relationships built around a shared purpose: Service To Mankind.
The stories shared in various sessions added even greater depth to the experience. Attendees spoke passionately about the service projects taking place in their local communities, offering examples of how small acts of kindness make meaningful changes. Others shared deeply personal stories about their own hearing health journeys. These conversations were powerful reminders that behind every initiative, every program, and every cause are real people. Listening to those experiences created understanding, inspiration, and a stronger sense of community.
And then there was THE FUN. Amid the meaningful conversations and important discussions, there was so much laughter. Sertomans are well known for their love of throwing their entire self into what they do, and that includes dressing for the occasion! I loved seeing all the 80’s themed outfits at the Silent Disco Welcome Party.
What impressed me most was the growth and depth of the culture that continues to be built within Sertoma. It encourages people to bring their authentic selves, share their stories, and invest in one another. The result is an experience that leaves attendees feeling renewed, inspired, and grateful to be part of something larger than themselves.
I left the event truly blown away by how deeply this culture resonates with those who attend. It is the reason people return year after year. More importantly, it is what transforms a gathering into a community and makes the experience so meaningful long after the conference has ended.
Don’t miss out and plan to join in next year on October 1-2 in Kansas City! Additional information will show up in your inbox soon.
