When Sertoma received a donation of thousands of hearing amplifiers, we knew that we had one mission in mind: to get these devices into the hands of those individuals who need them most. We knew they wouldn’t be a solution for everyone, but for those who are unable or unwilling to get or care for hearing aids, they still provide assistive technology that can help users hear more clearly.
What we could have never anticipated is that the amplifiers would actually encourage people to pursue hearing aids as a result. Richard Pocker, a member of the Sertoma Club of Greater Sarasota, shared that a fellow member had asked to borrow an amplifier to test with their father. He had previously been ambivalent in getting hearing aids through the VA, but after testing it at home, he realized just how much hearing loss he had.
“He was so thrilled to be able to hear the television at half the current volume that he went and filled out the VA application the next day,” Pocker said. “The gesture changed a life.”
Thanks to that powerful testimonial, Richard ordered a dozen amplifiers to share with people in the club’s Florida community.
Sertomans have also made a positive impact at regional conventions, thanks to Amplified Hearing. Last spring, during the Heart of America Regional Convention, a hotel staff member overheard an update about the program. Interested in how it might help, they spoke with staff and members about a situation on their catering team. While the individual could hear well in most settings, they sometimes struggled to keep up in the noisy kitchen or loud meeting rooms. As a result, they were provided with an amplifier, enabling them to work more effectively, all without any cost to them.
I have even seen the power of Amplified Hearing in my own family. When an older family expressed that they were having issues with their hearing but (STUBBORNLY) didn’t want to get hearing aids, I told them about Sertoma’s program. She picked up an amplifier before I had the chance to get her one of ours. After a couple weeks of using it, she started to feel more comfortable with the idea of getting fitted for more permanent aids.
We have had 41 other organizations follow in the steps of Richard and our Heart of America attendees. Together, they have put nearly 1,200 amplifiers into the hands of people experiencing hearing loss in communities throughout the U.S. and Canada.
If you would like to join these clubs in their efforts, we still have amplifiers available! Clubs are not required to pay for the devices themselves; they will only incur a flat shipping fee. Learn more about the program and place your order at Sertoma.org/AmplifiedHearing.
