A Quiet Hero: the Sertoma Professional Education Grant

It might not be the most talked-about program we offer, but the Sertoma Professional Education Grant is quietly making a big impact. Designed to support continuing education, this grant helps Sertoma Affiliates stay up to date with the training and certifications they need to maintain high standards—and to better serve their patients and clients.

While the annual award of $425 may seem modest, it often makes all the difference. For many, it's the critical support that enables them to attend a key conference, enroll in a professional development course, or pursue a new certification. In today’s landscape—where budget cuts and reduced funding are squeezing nonprofit organizations—this kind of support is more important than ever.

One inspiring example is Dr. Holly Pedersen, a faculty member in the Special Education program at Minot State University in Minot, North Dakota. With support from her grant, Dr. Pedersen was able to attend the 24th International Congress on the Education of the Deaf (ICED), held this past July in Rome.

ICED, held only once every five years, is widely recognized as one of the world’s premier conferences dedicated to the education of individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing. The event brings together educators, researchers, and professionals from around the globe for in-depth sessions and critical networking opportunities.

Beyond the formal presentations, ICED serves as a springboard for international collaboration—often sparking future academic, scientific, and professional partnerships. Thanks to the Sertoma grant, Dr. Pedersen was able to engage with thought leaders, share research, and build connections that will benefit her students, her university, and the broader field of special education.

“I also [presented] research conducted at Minot State,” Dr. Pedersen shared when she applied for the grant.

Dr. Pedersen has been a member of the Minot Sertoma Club since 2019. In addition to her personal membership, the university where she works is an Affiliate member of Sertoma, a status sponsored by the Minot Sertoma Club. Dr. Pedersen plays a key role in maintaining and strengthening the connection between the university and the club, supporting Sertoma’s mission through both personal and institutional engagement.
