Join or Die is a 2023 documentary that explores the erosion of community engagement in the United States, framed through the influential research of political scientist Robert D. Putnam, particularly his landmark book Bowling Alone. In this facilitated conversation session, attendees will reflect on the themes presented in Join or Die and how they resonate with Sertoma’s evolving role in volunteer and mission work. Using the documentary as a springboard, the group will explore how changing trends in volunteerism—such as the desire for flexible, mission-driven engagement—can inform new approaches to sustaining Sertoma’s mission of Service to Mankind. Participants will be encouraged to share their own experiences, insights and ideas for fostering innovation and meaningful connection within their clubs and communities.
