With new generations seeking more flexible, purpose-driven ways to give back, the organization must evolve by embracing shifting trends The core mission of Service to Mankind remains vital, but sustaining impact will likely depend on adapting to new models of connection—ones that prioritize cultural openness, innovation and a deeper sense of community built across both physical and virtual spaces.
 

Morning Session: Screening of Join or Die
Join or Die is a 2023 documentary that explores the erosion of community engagement in the United States, framed through the influential research of political scientist Robert D. Putnam, particularly his landmark book Bowling Alone. Blending insights from prominent political leaders with the stories of everyday Americans active in grassroots organizations, the film paints a vivid picture of how social connection and civic involvement are essential to the nation’s future. The documentary underscores the urgent need to rebuild the social fabric that holds communities together.

 


Afternoon Session: Join or Die Facilitated Discussion
In this facilitated conversation session, attendees will reflect on the themes presented in Join or Die and how they resonate with Sertoma’s evolving role in volunteer and mission work. Using the documentary as a springboard, the group will explore how changing trends in volunteerism—such as the desire for flexible, mission-driven engagement—can inform new approaches to sustaining Sertoma’s mission of Service to Mankind. Participants will be encouraged to share their own experiences, insights and ideas for fostering innovation and meaningful connection within their clubs and communities. Together, we’ll consider how Sertoma can not only adapt to the shifting landscape of community engagement but also lead the way in revitalizing the spirit of service in both traditional and emerging spaces.
